Rhiannon Young Case Study – Neath Library

This a case study of Rhiannon sharing the time spent and volunteering experience of working in Neath Library as an IT mentor giving people on to one IT support. Rhiannon volunteer four days a week in Neath Library.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time working on the Get NPT online scheme with Stuart Morgan and Fiona Davies. When I first started I was exploring my self-identity, and was at the beginning of the process of discovering who I was, and what direction I wanted to go in the future in professional and social development. I was also suffering from high levels of depression and anxiety.

I was immediately welcomed into a warm and nurturing environment, given high standards of training to improve my support skills; in particular, listening, communicating, and assessing the needs of each individual client and providing tailored support to suit their needs.

Over time my confidence and my responsibilities steadily grew towards me becoming a mentor for newer volunteers and a team leader in the I.T support sessions. I was also put in charge of a six week project, newly developed by Fiona Davies and myself which led to an ongoing extra dimension of support offered by the MCC. This led to people becoming more digitally included and at the same time increasing fitness and health in a fun and hugely interactive experience using worn Fit-bit devices and associated apps.

The support I received from everybody at the MCC has been fantastic. They have always been patient with me and all the volunteers on the project. I have learned a great deal from this project, gaining much more than I expected to."
